The Week that Was
Well I have said it before many times. Fall is by far My favorite time of the year. This past week, the fall color reached its peak here in Smallville. I took some time to go over to the grounds of the Henry Clay Estate (google it) and just sat in wonder among a riot of crimson, dayglo and burnt orange and vivid crimson amid a few remaining holdouts of olive green. It was at dusk and the sun was illuminating this gorgeous handiwork before it slid out of view, leaving a beautiful sky of pink, magenta and orange in it's wake. I know we don't have oceans and beaches here, but folks without seasons don't know what they are missing every year with this most beautiful time.
HALLOWEEN! I hope you all found your inner spook and found someplace to tear loose this past Friday. I have a very hip, wacky and incredibly creative neighbor. She is definitely the straw that stirs the neighborhood fun and once again, she held a rocking good Halloween party. A hairdresser with a large gay clientele, the mix of folks was quite a sight. A lot of Adams and cowboys and Indians with a few sailors thrown in. Very much fun. I was not en femme which may shock the daylights out of you, but was really not sure who would be showing up and was not ready to out myself to the neighborhood fully. Now you may think as I used to that Halloween is the perfect cover to do such dressup games among vanilla friends. But the question always comes up....."Where did you find boots that size....or who did your makeup?" When We graduate from campiness to doing this well, it tends to arouse suspicions I would rather not deal with. But bottom line, I had fun anyway. Now that this is not the ONLY time of the year I get to dress, as it was in the bad ol days, its not such a loss.
ELECTION....I remember four years ago, I was in the nation's capitol on Election Day. That afternoon I was card shopping at some funky little store down in Dupont Circle and there was this excitement in the air that Bushie was out and Kerry would surely be elected. DC is that way. Very libereal and firm believers in the potential good that government can bring to our lives. Well, we all know how that turned out. I have never been in a more depressed, and depressing place the day after. Three was just this tremendous malaise and resignation that hung over the place. Everyone walked around like they had a hundred pound backpack strapped to them.
Contrast that with the mood this week as I flew out of Smallville the day after the election. People were smiling, happy and optimistic. I am sure not everyone was, but they were hard to find. So whether your ticket prevailed or not, you have to be happy that the country feels a sense of hope that something new and better has a chance to grow now. Time will tell, but nothing can be gained now by pessimism or obstruction.
Today as I write this I am in the Big Easy. Have not been here for some eight plus years. Down here in the quarter, there is little evidence of the wrath of Katrina save the occasional photo book you see with vivid pictures of all the misery and destruction. A stroll down Bourbon Street is nostalgic, seedy and yet a bit eerie as there really are fewer people. Perhaps its just the season....or the post Halloween letdown (apparently they really do it up down here...will have to try that sometime). Or maybe the natives really have not come back.
At the same time, I can't believe how things do stay the same here. I was here......oh I won't tell you how many years ago it was....but I was FIVE!!! As I stroll down the brick streets so many years later, I look around and see Broussards, Arnaud's, Antoine's, Cafe Du Monde, The Old Absinthe House and place after place after place that still thrives today. It is comforting to go somewhere where the old family owned businesses have not been supplanted by chain monstrosities. They are here, in huge mall-like complexes on the river, but people seem to shun them because they seem so alien in this uniquely old and weathered place. I hope to take a haunted tour and cemetery tour this time...things I have not done heretofor. And am making a note to definitely fit a French Quarter Halloween in My lifetime before I am too old to enjoy it. And I will definitely do it en femme...Divinyl style...when I do!
Hope you enjoyed this departure from My typical video blog entry. Seems now and again I need to show a bit more depth than I typically do on those. Not to worry, as long as I like to talk, those will continue to roll out. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Happy Fall....whats left of it. Get out and see some color before its gone!!
